HAYSI FANTAYZEE
From THE NEW ROCK AND ROLL

What Spandau Ballet began, Culture Club and Haysi Fantayzee have taken to outrageous extremes. As fashion standard bearers, Kate Haysi (Katherina Maria Garner), Jeremiah, and (manager/third member) Paul Caplin have the rare capacity to still be able to turn heads in British public places.

"Our visual influences are along similar lines to our musical influences- very Dickensian, Hillbilly, Huckleberry Finn, style clothing. We like that sort of imagery," explains Kate, adding for good measure, "Was (Not Was) and the Tom Tom Club are probably the only '80s style music that has happened so far."

Haysi Fantayzee came to notice in 1982 with the quirky single John Wayne Is Big Leggy, followed by Holy Joe and Shiny Shiny. Their debut album, BATTLE HYMNS FOR CHILDREN SINGING (complete with booklet) appeared in 1983, by which time Police manager Miles Copeland had engaged them to compere a video programme for American cable TV featuring Spandau Ballet, the Anti-Nowhere League, Wide Boy Awake, and Steve Strange.

Kate and Paul live together on the top floor of an old underwear factory and devote most of their free time to developing their White Rasta dreadlocks and devising new clothing absurdities from any old junk they can lay their hands on. Occasionally they get around to playing some music
