JOLLY DARKNESS
iDIOt PRINTS Introducing Kate
Garner's Jolly Darkness Series
from the official press release.
iDIOt enthusiastically announces a preview of the
Jolly Darkness print series, Kate Garner's follow-up
to her Identity Artists photographic series.
Jolly Darkness is a colourful and
eerie series of Ltd Edition signed prints that derives inspiration
and source material from Leigh Bowery, JT Leroy, Boy George, Marilyn
Manson, Orlan and other Identity Artists. (See attachments for previews
and go to the iDIOt store @ http://stores.ebay.co.uk/iDIOt-sHOp
for full viewing of both series)
"I am making pieces that are as flamboyant and challenging as the
artists who, through make-up, costume, prosthesis and persona manipulation,
affect entirely new identities and then bravely hit the streets
with them. When you see someone like Leigh Bowery on the Subway
it completely shakes your assemblage point; You feel liberated and,
for a brief spell, you know you are living in a world where such
fantastic beings are possible."
A world class photographer and media artist, Garner is no stranger
to the Identity Arts, having hit the streets with some of the most
memorable outfits of the 80s as Haysi Kate, the Haysi Fantaysee
chanteuse who, along with DJ superstar Jeremy Healy influenced looks
for everyone from Boy George and David Bowie to John Galliano.
Garner is continuing her work on the Identity Artist series in preparation
for major exhibitions in San Francisco and London in Spring and
Summer 2007. Look for Identity Artist events at the Victoria and
Albert Museum and other major institutions in December 2007.
A major exhibition of the Jolly Darkness series is planned for January
2008.
