Turning Japanese
September 2000

Last year Dead Or Alive were in the midst of negotiations with Avex to bring their fans their greatest release yet: FRAGILE, formerly Dead Or Alive Anthology/ Dead Or Alive 2000. Now, as 2000 draws to a close, Pete and Steve are planning to launch the end result of almost five years of creative effort.

Japan has long played tolerant host to the band's creativity. From Dead Or Alive's earliest years there onward, they were music icons and targets of fascination, scrutiny, and adoration. One Japanese daily summed up the country's obsession with Dead Or Alive in one perfect phrase: "Forget Madonna, we've got Pete Burns." When the band arrived in Japan for their now legendary RIP IT UP LIVE appearances, another artist came up short in comparison with them: Michael Jackson's tour dates had to be rescheduled to ensure attendance, as his promoters weren't sure he could compete for ticket sales. The Disco In Dream appearance saw Dead Or Alive take the stage as the main act, preceded by Kylie Minogue and Sinita. Dead Or Alive's Japanese appearances over the years have proven that they are just as capable of captivating a stadium crowd as a club clientele, showing a versatility rare in modern artists.

In 1995 Japan was the first country to release their last album, NUKLEOPATRA. And now AVEX TRAX is preparing for a scheduled September 27th release of the eighth DOA album, FRAGILE. A radio spot on Club Beat Freak is tentatively scheduled for the last week in September. A track off of FRAGILE, Hit And Run Lover", is already seeing airplay in Japan. A small gig is scheduled for October 12 at Velfarre, a Tokyo nightspot, and if popular demand is a factor, there will be more to follow. Stay tuned to the RIGHT STUFF or Katsu's excellent Japanese DOA site, SAYONARA SUGAR PIE, whose link is listed below.
