February 1999
Pete appeared three times in a UK TV documentary aired on the evening of 17 February. Entitled "A Walk on the Wild Side," the show was a documentary examining androgyny in pop music, and was aired nationally on ITV.
Pete appeared with red contact lenses and a red outfit which included a sweater with swatches of red across a white background, red trousers, and red lounging slippers. He commented on how he is never mentioned in UK fashion magazines because his appearance is so extreme that writers act like they don't see him so they don
't have to deal with him. The program's narrator commented that Pete's mid-80's appearance was merely preparation for the "exotic creature" he had become today.
Many of the artists featured in the program, including Marc Almond and Holly Johnson, mentioned DOA with reference to artists who had a major impact on pop music as it developed in the 1980's.
Although Pete looked thinner than when last seen publicly, he was in good spirits and was his usual candid self in the brief interview.
This month marks the twentieth anniversary of Pete's arrival on the music scene as a serious (well, sort of) recording artist. Pat Geary has written a commentary that examines both Pete's career and the strong allure he and his music have continued to have for the fans. click here to read it.
