PETE SALUTES PETE!
A report by Pat Geary
Pete Waterman's biography, "I Wish I Was Me", has just been published in the
UK and contains Waterman's recollections of his experiences with Dead or
Alive as well as a colour photo of DOA in their SAW days.
Pete W. has nothing but praise for Pete B., stating that "he (Burns)is very
very smart when it comes to pop". He goes on to state that he found both Pete
and Steve to be "engaging...I liked them and knew I wanted to work with them."
Waterman goes on to state: "Working with Pete Burns was one of the most
wonderful experiences of my life. We had arguments at times, but ultimately
it was a pleasure. He's volatile, and often misguided, something he would
probably admit himself, but one of the most entertaining human beings I've
had the good fortune to work with."
Waterman adds, "...I hope pop's history books give him [Burns]the respect he
deserves."
Waterman's book can be ordered over the Internet from any good UK bookstore,
and is well worth a read. There is also a double CD on Universal Records UK
released in conjunction with the book called "The Hit Factory" and containing
UK hits produced by SAW including DOA as well as Kylie Minogue, Bananarama,
and all the other ususal Stock, Aitken, and Waterman suspects.
FRAGILE is now out in the Japanese record shops and being shipped on import. You will find some image previews here. Pat and Rose have both spoken to either Steve or Pete within the last week, and
they are both fine. They hope everybody enjoys the new album, and invite your
comments on "Fragile" on the message boards at the Right Stuff.

September 2000

We have just completed an exclusive interview with Pete, which we will produce on the RIGHT STUFF in instalments. Pete proved to be gracious, candid, and witty, and gave an insightful interview that was well worth the wait. In the meantime, check out this article that was translated for the page.
Our Japanese info page is up and running. To view it, we recommend that you have Macromedia Flash Player installed. So far the upcoming highlights are as follows:
September 27- FRAGILE will be released and be available on import. You can also get a preview of one of the new tracks "Hit And Run Lover", by clicking here. Thanks again, Katsu.
October 6: Dead Or Alive are scheduled as guests at the ZIPPIE DANCE PARTY (hosted by zip FM) at J-MAX in Nagoya. They are releasing a compilation album called "super euro zip" which will
include "Something In My House".
October 12: DOA are performing at Velfarre in Tokyo.
Pete and Steve previewed tracks from their forthcoming album "Fragile" to Right
Stuff staff on September 15th. Here's Pat's exclusive
report:
"Pete & Steve are very excited about their new album, and after hearing three
tracks in their entirety (plus one remix), I can see why. They feel this is
their best work EVER, and I have no doubt their fans and the general public will
agree.
"Isn't It a Pity" is the biggest departure, a totally different sound that I
would describe as Prince meets Kraftwerk in a Berlin drag bar. It's very
rhythmic, funky, and skeletal sounding...lots of space in between the slinky
grooves. The lyrics, as is so often the case with Pete, work on many levels,
addressing his fascination with physical appearance and glamour while also
raising issues of gender and male/female roles.
"I Promise Myself" is majestic dance pop in all its epic glory..."Abba shagging
the corpse of Dusty Springfield" is what I jotted down while listening to it.
I listened to two mixes of "Hit & Run Lover", the song which many of you have
already heard. As you know, it sounds like a MASSIVE hit, and combines classic
DOA with touches of Nukleopatra-style easternisms.
The boys return to Japan later this month for a series of showcases. There will
also be a video for Hit & Run, details will be revealed in due course. This
constitutes an official relaunch of DOA in Japan and with the mighty Avex behind
them, expect a major assault on the Japanese pop world.
Today Japan, tomorrow the world! Fasten your seatbelts, everybody......"

February 2000
We are now marking 20 years since Dead Or Alive took on its first, embryonic form. This year looks set to be an exciting one. Pete has written at least four new songs (MIRROR BALL, THE WRONG SIDE OF RIGHT, COME BACK, and BACK IN BUSINESS); at last reports recording will begin at the end of February.
